You vs the World

You're guilty of it, I know you are. Every artist has done it before. You're not the first and you definitely won't be the last.

YOU MADE A PIECE OF ART ONLY BECAUSE IT'S IN STYLE RIGHT NOW!

You created something ONLY because the movie is hot right now, the cartoon is on every television, the super hero is soooooo cool and everyone and their mother wants a commissioned piece of whatever their kid is drooling over at that second. The only problem...you hate the subject. But you create it anyway because hey, let's be honest...you need the money.

Now...when is it acceptable to create something and not be interested in it? Does the piece suffer because of your lack of interest or do you still do your best and pump out the Mona Lisa of the Star Wars universe? I was put in this very predicament when a client wanted a piece I wasn't really in to. Even though I hated the topic and was showing the client every step along the way...they were loving it. So I kept on painting.

I think when it came down to it, it was the excitement of my client that kept me going with the piece. The way they reacted during every stage...yes even the ugly stage...gave me the confidence that I was doing the piece justice.
